Taking in the Good
Did youknow it take less than a second to take in something negative, but over 30
seconds to take in something good.
So, what does this mean?
We are all programmed to be on high alert. Unfortunately, we have not evolved to
prevent our brain from thinking a saber tooth tiger is out to get us.
But the saber tooth tiger has turned into a car driving slowly, an electrical device not
doing what you want, or a person looking at you in a strange way.
We can reprogramme our brain and learn to not be on such high alert.
We can do this by being in the moment, talking down our negative internal voice and
learning to take in the good.
How do we take in the good?
When something good is happening, don’t just reach for your phone to take a picture
or update your social media status. Take a moment to really appreciate the
good, the moment, the positive.
- Look at where you are.
- Understand how this moment is making you feel physically and emotionally.
- Tell yourself: “This is something good. This is something positive.”
- Smile. Making your face smile makes happy hormones.
Aim to do something everyday that makes you feel good.
And don’tforget to appreciate that moment.
